Vineyard View to Roussillon

I painted this breathtaking view en plein air from the vineyards beneath the village of Roussillon, en Provence, France. The town crowns a towering, and dramatic ochre and red hilltop and is so distinctive that it can be identified from miles away. The ochre color is still mined today and prized for it purity as a pigment for paints.  The striking red and ochre cliffs make a sharp contrast to the surrounding dark pine trees, vineyards and fields below.
