Take Home Maui

A few years back, I joined my Maui painting buddies to go to Lahaina for a plein air paint-out. There are so many great subjects with interesting angles, bright colors, and vintage old-time architecture everywhere.

A gaily-painted little shop called "Take Home Maui" on Dickenson Street caught our attention.  The funky establishment sold lots of Maui gold pineapple, and other fresh offerings that tourists loved to buy.  It had the classic single-wall wood construction, plantation style green paint with white trim, and a bright orange roof.

A group of us wedged in a tight spot between Village Gallery and the Baldwin Home, a scant half block off Front Street. We set up our easels side-by-side hoping to catch the early morning light illuminating this special place.  There was plenty of shade, very little traffic, and an interesting subject. Perfect.

I have often stated that for me, part of the joy of painting is capturing "old Hawaii" subjects.  Never could I have imagined that a major wildfire would reduce the entire beloved and storied Lahaina town to ashes in one dreadful night.  I am so grateful for my memories and the many opportunities to experience and paint near and in historic Lahaina.
