Japanese plantation works first introduced shave ice (not shaved) to Hawaii 100 years ago.  It was a Sunday-only, melt-in-your-mouth tropical treat. As they left plantation life and opened up shops and family grocery stores, they included the refreshing delicacy. As they say, the rest is history. It became an instant hit and is as popular today all over the islands as it was at its inception. This painting is about friends enjoying shave ice on a hot day outside the legendary and iconic Matsumoto's Shave Ice on Oahu's North Shore prior to its renovation.
