When painting in Lahaina, I loved to traverse the quieter, less polished “side” streets of town. You could find a delightful haphazard mix of old residential structures and some that morphed into various “mom and pop” shops. One day I noticed the gaily painted “Annie’s Island Shave Ice” (also know in the islands as Ice Shave) on Prison Street.  For those in the know, it was the “go-to” place for shave ice treats, and other ice cream delights.

The disaster in Lahaina captured our hearts with a profound feeling of sadness and a desire to be of help.

It has compelled me to create a number of paintings of Maui, Lahaina and Upcountry, as a personal way to express both my grief and optimism. When change happens gradually, it is sometimes easy to forget how things used to look ‘back in the day.”  When change happens overnight, it’s hard to fathom and accept the new reality.

I am grateful to have the ability to paint. It is a way to bring my memories alive and maybe even help others remember happier times as well.
